What gets built on Sanibel. Sanibel is a barrier island in Lee County, off Fort Myers, known for resorts, inns, restaurants, retail, and the institutional buildings that serve a destination community. After Hurricane Ian came ashore nearby in 2022, much of the island's commercial building stock entered a rebuilding and hardening cycle — resorts, restaurants, retail centers, and civic buildings being rebuilt or retrofitted to current code.
