Why samples still surprise owners
Coated glass changes with sky conditions, interior lighting, and viewing angle. Anodize and PVDF read differently beside Low-E reflections. Approving a 12-inch glass corner indoors at noon does not equal approving a west elevation at sunset.
Viewing protocol (template)
- Agree indoor vs outdoor viewing, time-of-day window, and distance
- View glass in the proposed makeup (monolithic vs IGU, Low-E surface location as specified)
- Hold aluminum finish samples beside the glass, not in a separate meeting
- Photograph reference conditions only as a record of what was seen, not as a color standard
- Record accept / accept-as-noted / reject with names and dates

Architect approval fields
Project name, mark or elevation range, glass makeup ID, finish code, viewing date/location/conditions, decision, conditions of approval, and signatures. Keep the signed form with the submittal file.

Should glass and aluminum finishes be approved together?
Yes when both are visible on the same elevation. Separate approvals are a common source of reflectivity and color surprises.
Do samples guarantee an exact color match on the building?
No. Coated glass and finishes shift with lighting and angle. A written viewing protocol reduces surprise; it does not create an absolute match warranty.
When is a full mockup needed instead of a hand sample?
When the specification requires it, or when reflectivity, frit, or large coated areas are aesthetic-critical. Follow the project spec.
What should a GC send to start sample review?
Elevations, glass makeup requirements, finish codes, and any mockup size/location requirements.
