Scope boundary: This article does not explain how to bypass locks, defeat readers, clone credentials, or alter access software. It only assigns who typically provides power, cable, hardware, and commissioning on a commercial storefront door.
Why storefront access control needs a matrix
Electrified storefront doors sit at the seam of Division 08, Division 26, and Division 28 (or the project’s security package). When the seam is blank, the GC discovers the gap after the frame is glazed: no power at the header, no EPT or electric hinge, no final connection, no programming window.
Fill the matrix at buyout, not at punch.

Power
Line-voltage to the operator or power supply is rarely a glazing invent. Put it on the electrical drawings and the door elevation. If the elevation shows an electrified opening and the electrical sheets are silent, stop and RFI before fabrication release.
Glazing still needs to know voltage at the hardware (often low-voltage after a power supply) so the correct electric hinge, strike, or exit device is released.
Wiring and transfers
Separate three cable problems:
- Backbone from the access panel or power supply to the door vicinity
- Transfer through the frame (EPT, electric hinge, loop)
- Final landing on the electrified device
Different trades often own each segment. Write the segments into the matrix. Do not assume the glazing crew pulls backbone cable because they set the door.
Electrified hardware
When the door hardware set lists electrified locksets, strikes, exit devices, or operators, Division 08 usually furnishes and installs those devices as part of the storefront package. Readers, panels, and credential systems usually sit with security.
Coordinate hand, swing, stile width, and prep with the approved shop drawings. A reader that does not fit the stile is a design coordination failure, not an install surprise.
Programming and commissioning
Programming means configuring the access system and owner credentials. That work belongs to the security integrator or owner path named in the contract. Glazing commissions the mechanical door and its specified hardware function.
Hold a joint function demo: door opens, latches, closes, and the access system behaves per the written sequence of operations.
